Switch not recognising SD card, but PC is!

Jun 07, 2023

@laura_er_84 I'll do my best here.

The intermittent "sd card has been removed" may mean your card reader is faulty, as far as I know. The card reader can be replaced. I don't know for a fact that this is the only reason you can encounter that issue. If someone else here knows otherwise, chime in. If you talk to nintendo support, the first question they will ask will likely be, "is your console up to date?". So, as a formality, make sure the console is updated.

Game save data is stored separate from the games in its own spot on switch internal memory. So, if you change micro SD cards, or change physical game copies, your game save data is safe & still on the console. If you lose your cartridge & borrow a friends, you'll still resume your game save progress.

When you boot up a game, the switch makes you chose which switch user icon to boot up with, that's your game save profile, basically.

1) After you transfer to a new sd card, you will resume your game progress like nothing happened. You cannot pick and chose game files to transfer. You transfer the whole Nintendo folder.

2) If you removed your sd card and the cloud save download option is grayed out, I think that makes sense since your game save data is still on the Switch's internal memory, not on the sd card. So, I don't believe it's grayed out because of lack of space. You'll get a prompt saying you don't have enough space.

While the NSO cloud backs up game save data, some games do not have NSO cloud save support. Nintendo support has a page with a list of games that don't have cloud save support. Here's the list: https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a...
